Adventures In Art Journaling

I decided that this year I was going to really focus on being creative, and one of the ways I am doing that is by starting an art journal. I am a perfectionist, and my perfectionism often leads to procrastination with creative projects. I wanted to get into the habit of regularly creating and finishing things, with less pressure. An art journal seemed like the perfect place to play. The combination of media used in art journals means that if I feel like painting or drawing I can, but if I don't feel like that I can just cut up paper, and collage away to my heart's content. I was also really inspired by seeing My Fair Pixel's amazing art journal spreads, and that pushed me to finally get started on my own journal!

The first spread I created was this moth and moon themed piece. I used lots of moth images from an old book, some moon stickers from Mo-Card, cut out moons from some paper from The Glittery Hands Box, and a mixture of acrylic and watercolour paints.

I'll probably do a more in-depth post on how I put spreads together once I've had a bit more experience, but I basically laid everything out without gluing anything, played around with where I wanted the moths and moons to be placed, and then started sticking things down and painting around the collaged pieces. I think it turned out to be very striking.

This was my second spread, which used galaxy tape from MX, moon paper from The Glittery Hands Box, cut out butterflies and a sunset picture from an old nature book, a watercolour moon I painted, watercolour crayons and acrylic paints.

I love the whimsical feel it has.

This is my third spread, which was done on a day I didn't feel like painting or drawing but still wanted to do something art based. Allowing myself to do something purely collage was really freeing, and I think it turned out great!

I used cut out moth, woodland and mushroom images form old books, a very old Daler Rowney shade card, some paper from a stamp collecting album and some decoupage pictures.

I have really been enjoying working on my art journal, and it is helping me to generally feel more creatively inspired and focused, even outside of the work I do on it. I will definitely be sharing more pages from it on here every so often, but for more "real time" updates my Instagram is the best place to look. I'm sharing my finished spreads over there, as well as sharing some unfinished pages on Instagram stories.

Which is your favourite of these art journal spreads?

  1. These are just wonderful! Very inspiring! I need to try and find more beautiful books to cut up for mine!

  2. They are all so beautiful! I think my favourite colour-wise would be the last one, but overall I'm just really smitten with the first, it's so pretty!

  3. WOW! Your artwork is beautiful <3 I really really love the spreads that you've created so far :) You are so talented, especially at painting those moons! I wish I could do that. They look so realistic!

It is so tough to choose a favourite of the three, because I love them all for different reasons. I very much love the words on spread number 3, but I think that I'm going to have to choose the first one as my favourite! I'm lovin' the space moths theme, it's very creative! I can't wait to see what else you do in your art journal. Keep up the fabulous work! I am very inspired to have another go at making my own art journal :) - Sarah x
