Paper Gem Garlands

One of the things I need to do as part of Project Slash The Stash is to use up all the kits I collected from copies of Mollie Makes magazine. They give away a little craft kit with each issue, and although they were often what drew me to the magazine in the first place, for some reason I never got around to making them! So I decided to start simple, with a paper gem kit designed by Minieco, which came with an issue of Mollie Makes several years ago and had been lying in a drawer ever since.

First of all, I made a pastel rainbow coloured gem garland with the papers from the kit, and some silver embroidery thread to hang the gems from. I made it in an evening, it turned out super pretty and very Instagram friendly, and I was happy with it. I thought that was that. Little did I know that it was the start of a paper gem obsession...

I started thinking about all the paper gem possibilities, and my eyes alighted on some shimmery white wrapping paper I had bought from Paperchase. After several days of spending all my free time folding and sticking paper gems, I had another garland.

This time I decided that something was needed between each paper gem as an accent, so I added some iridescent, crescent moon shaped sew on rhinestones. I strung the garland on some iridescent white embroidery thread.

I am so happy with how this garland turned out, and love the otherworldly, magical look it has.

After getting my beautiful witchy crystal print from MyFairPixel I've been really into the idea of black crystals, so my next thought was a black gem garland. I had some black writing paper which I never used, so I cut out lots of gem shapes from the remaining sheets and got sticking.

I managed to get a little bit of white paint on one of my black gems by accident, but I thought it looked quite good. So I went to town with the white paint, and flicked it randomly over half the gems. I then strung them on black sewing thread, alternating between plain black gems and the splattered gems. I love how it turned out! I think the white paint looks a bit like constellations, and I really like the witchy look this garland has. And of course it looks great next to my other black and white decor items.

Now I'm thinking of other gem garlands I could make...perhaps a silver garland, or a holographic garland, or a gradient garland!

The template I used isn't available any more, but there is a similar downloadable template on the Minieco blog. I used this wrapping paper for the white gem garland.

  1. I absolutely adore these Polly! The one with the little rhinestones in between look so sweet, and I love the way you flicked white paint over the black ones to create that effect, looks so cool and you're right, otherworldly too! Love it and they look amazing hung over and next your gemstones there. - Tasha

    1. Thanks Tasha! I'm trying to work out how to make a template to make some different styles of gems, I think some more crystal-like ones which stand up would look pretty great too!

  2. Wow, those look amazing. All I have is white computer paper but I want to make these. I guess I'm going to have to hunt a pattern down when I have time for crafts. The black ones are my favorite. I wonder, is it possible to make these out of wrapping paper for Christmas ornaments or would that be too thin?

    1. The white ones I made were made from wrapping paper so I think that would be fine :) If you need patterns check minieco.co.uk and mrprintables.com, they both have some gem shape templates. Mr Printables actually has a paper crystal advent calendar which looks amazing!

  3. Omg! These garlands are so cute! I want to make some, wow :) I love the colourful one the most, but I'm really lovin' the black one too. Until I scrolled down to read more of your post, I actually thought that the wrapping paper already had a galaxy theme to it so to discover that you created this yourself with white paint was awesome! You did such a great job. You're so very creative! x
