Although I've liked Grimes' music for a while, her album came out when I was going through a very different musical phase and deep in an obsession with a different band. So although I thought the visuals for the first video from her Art Angels album were interesting, I didn't pay a lot of attention to the rest of them. That is, until a couple of weeks ago, when Youtube autoplay did something good for once and started playing the video for World Princess Part II. The castle they were dancing around in looked awfully familiar, and I realised that it was Chepstow Castle, a place I've visited many times. In fact, all but one of the video locations were places that I'm very familiar with and have spent a lot of time around at different points in my life. It was really eerie but strangely fascinating to watch a music video shot in all these places that I knew so well.
With my interest piqued, I ended up watching the whole Ac!d Reign series of videos. When it got to HANA's Chimera video, I knew from the first frame that it had been shot in Bristol. It features some of Bristol's most iconic, gorgeous architecture (including my beloved mermaid fountain) as well as really humdrum, run down bits of the city, and one of the many disused graveyards which have been overtaken by nature. After a bit of googling, I found out that this series of videos had been shot in between tour dates, with no crew and mostly filmed on a phone.
I'd been having a massive slump in terms of blogging and Youtube, feeling completely uninspired and like what I was doing was a bit pointless. As I watched these videos, a huge wave of inspiration washed over me. Seeing successful people essentially playing dress up and being filmed on a phone in places that were so familiar and accessible to me, places that I love and want to show off myself, made me realise that the things I want to do creatively are possible. Although for artists like Grimes and HANA it's much easier to access costumes, locations and someone to film than it's going to be for me, just seeing it being done at all has woken up all sorts of ideas in my mind. All those whimsical, fairy tale infused videos and outfit shots and photos I dream of are possible with a bit of forward planning and a lot less caring what people think, and I'm in a brilliant location to make them happen. It's good to feel inspired again.
