Mermaid Thrift Haul

I recently tidied the shelf I keep most of my mermaid treasures on, and thought to myself "I have some room for more mermaid things now". Of course this was tempting fate, because I promptly found all of the mermaid things while thrifting.
Perhaps the most fabulous of all is this slightly bonkers mermaid tea cosy. It is handknitted, and someone put so much time and care into this! I especially like the graduated colours and ripple effect of the waves at the bottom. I have a seashell tea pot which this tea cosy will go nicely with.

On a considerably more subtle note, I picked up this gorgeous handmade ceramic dish with raised fish and seaweed detail, and a ripple pattern. The colours are gorgeous and it looks so much like a little rock pool. I have it on my dressing table, which has a mermaid theme, and I keep trinkets in it.

I can never resist a seashell shaped dish when I see one, so I had to grab these ceramic and glass beauties. I think they'll be useful whenever I finally get around to having a mermaid tea party. I especially like the glass one, as it has some interesting moulded detail.

This cute and kitsch washbag drew me in with the cheerful mermaid print, and it will be perfect for my future travels. I know some people would find buying a washbag second hand disgusting, but it has been thoroughly cleaned since I bought it!

I'm always on the look out for shells in charity shops-they're something I worry about the provenance of when buying new, as the shell trade can be pretty dodgy and in some places sea creatures are killed for their shells. I don't feel so bad buying them second hand, as it is more like re-using and making sure these beautiful objects don't end up being thrown away. I was really pleased to find this lovely array of shells.

I got another sea shell shaped dish, this time a huge one. I'm not really sure what I'll end up doing with this but it was too beautiful to leave behind.

I adore the swirling green pattern on this vintage glass perfume bottle, and I thought it looked like something a mermaid would have on her dressing table.

One of the stranger items I picked up was this letter opener with a shell handle. I do love how it looks and it will come in handy as I like writing and receiving letters. I'm wondering how mermaids would get mail now-perhaps via messenger seahorse?

My most recent thrift purchase was this gorgeous charm bracelet which has the most perfect charms on it! I like the Little Mermaid reference with the fork charm.

Do you have a favourite item from my haul? And have you had any good thrift finds yourself recently?

  1. Beautiful! I love everything you found, especially those shell shaped dishes, they'll look so lovely with some trinkets in them. Love the print on the washbag too, very cute. You can never have too many mermaid themed items! Very important about the shells too, it's always a good idea to be wary of where you buy them from. - Tasha

  3. I'm convinced there must be other secret mermaids where you live, otherwise how could you find so many treasures like these?! :)

  4. Wow, you've found so many awesome items! I love the mermaid tea cosy :) Whenever I see knitted 'dolls', it reminds me of a Cinderella doll I had when I was little that you could turn inside out to reveal another doll. One was Cinderella in her rags, and the other in her pretty blue ball gown. I loved it!

I also really love the glass shell dish. It's so pretty. I'd love to fill it with pebbles and display it in my bathroom :) That charm bracelet is lovely!

    1. I had a similar doll that had Red Riding Hood one way and her grandmother the other way!
