Seashell Tea Set

After years of coveting it, I finally won the pieces of this vintage seashell shaped tea set on eBay! I already showed the sugar bowl and milk jug in this post, but I thought I'd share some pictures of the full set.

The teapot, cup, sugar bowl and milk jug are all in the shape of upside down conch shells, and the teapot and sugar bowl have little shell shaped handles on the lids. The saucer is I think meant to look like an oyster shell (?), and the rectangular plate which the milk jug and sugar bowl stand on is decorated with patterns of seaweed and shells. It is all painted in shades of green, cream and brown.

I really like this set, I think it is really unusual and interesting, and obviously perfect for a mermaid! I'm pleased that it isn't stereotypical pastel mermaid colours, as I think the green is more me. I was lucky to find pieces in reasonable condition, which can actually be used and which won't just be ornamental. I plan to use everything in this set, although I don't take sugar in tea so might have to find an alternative use for the sugar bowl.

I haven't had chance to make tea with the set yet but I have found that the rectangular plate is perfect for fancy chocolate seashell eating!

If you want to find a similar set, they often pop up on eBay or Etsy, as well as in charity shops and car boot sales. If you're searching online try keywords like "Majolica", "seashell tea set", "vintage shell tea set" or "Japanese shell tea set".

  1. I just found your blog from the mori bloggers group on Facebook. Oh wow that is SUCH an amazing tea set!!!! on getting it! My dream is to find a set that looks like pieces of tree :^D

    1. Thank you! Yes I was so happy to finally get my hands on it. Funnily enough when I was looking for it, I stumbled across a listing for a teapot that looked like a tree trunk, and I loved that one too! I only need so many teapots though...

  2. Awesome, I'm so jealous and I'm not a tea drinker. Actually I'd love to start drinking tea but the few I picked out before were bitter. Do you know of a tea that's sort of sweet flavored without the sugar or honey that I won't be using? If you know any tea to suggest thanks and congrats on getting your tea set, I'll be forever jealous of it :)

  3. Many herbal and floral teas are sweet! Also a common reason for tea being bitter is steeping it too long. With caffeinated teas like black, green, white (although white can be steeped longer than the other 2 in my experience) the tea becomes bitter if you steep it too long! It's very easy to over steep. The box of tea will have a recommended time for caffeinated teas (usually about 2-5 minutes per cup). The majority of herbal teas however can be steeped for ages and still taste wonderful! I have this wonderful pomegranate white tea that is a bit sweet without any sugar, hibiscus is great, but definitely not sweet! It's very sour, and if you like sour i recommend it. It's very refreshing as iced tea with a bit of sugar. Mint tea is also not sweet, but also not bitter. It's definitely one of my favorites.
