For as long as I can remember I've loved everything to do with mermaids. I also love iridescent things. So when I spotted a Swarovski aurora borealis sea shell charm on ebay, I had to have it.
I think Swarovskis in the aurora borealis colourway look like bubbles turned into gems. They are so incredibly beautiful! I wanted to do the charm justice by pairing it with something equally as beautiful and special, but I also didn't want to spend too much money on making a single necklace. Luckily I had kept a broken vintage necklace, made from faceted AB glass beads.
The beads were in various sizes, and on the original necklace they were graduated in size order. I really wanted to emphasise the mermaid theme of this necklace, and I thought that they looked almost like bubbles or water droplets. So to keep that feeling, I strung them randomly, alternating between the larger and smaller beads. I don't think mermaids would be too neat anyway.
A simple silver charm (rather appropriately for this sea themed necklace, a lobster clasp) finished things off nicely.
I am so happy with the finished necklace, which hangs to chest length, just under the bust. I haven't had an opportunity to wear it yet, but come the summer I will be throwing on my best fish scale finery, and topping it off with this gorgeous shimmery creation.
