"Off the Canvas": Thomas Hamilton

One of the artists I was particularly struck by at Off The Canvas was Thomas Hamilton. Printing is something I've always enjoyed myself and I've produced a lot of work in this medium, which also means I know how difficult it is to get clear lines and detail using this method! Thomas' work was bold, clear and I instantly fell in love with his stylised figures and settings.

"Off The Canvas": The Collective

When visiting the Off the Canvas exhibition at UWE last week, I was enchanted by The Collective's display of tiny paper houses.

"Off the Canvas": Sam Cox

Sam Cox's artwork can't help but captivate you. It's so full of energy!

Much of Sam's display consisted of household items and furniture covered in his drawings.

Almost every inch was covered with his stylised, whimsical drawings of imaginary creatures and scenarios.

There is so much going on in Sam's pictures that it takes a while to pick out individual elements. From a distance it can look like a random pattern. It reminds me of those magic eye books where you had to squint to see a picture! I quite like that aspect though, it makes you really look at the drawings.

Once you do really look, you realise just how much detail is in the work. It really is amazing.

I liked the application of the drawings to the furniture and homewares and I could definitely see Sam's drawings being used for interior design and maybe printed textiles. A friend I was with commented that if furniture with Sam's drawings printed onto it was available, he'd decorate his entire house with it!

If you want to see more of his work, Sam Cox has a youtube channel, and a website.

Off the Canvas was at F Block Gallery, UWE Bower Ashton Campus.

"Off the Canvas" at UWE

A couple of days ago I went to Off the Canvas - Illustration second year exhibition at the University of the West of England. There was some amazing work on display!

This was Shy-bot, a small robot like figure who was fitted with a sensor, so that if you moved close to him he cowered away. He was supposed to represent the increased isolation and social awkwardness that has come as a result of the internet.

Tabitha Panter's display at Off the Canvas really caught my eye, with this inspirational felt banner.

Green Leaf

I recently ordered this beautiful vintage green leaf brooch from Mean Glean. I adore it, it looks so elven. It even has little veins on the leaf! It is made from a silver coloured metal with green enamel, such a pretty combination of colours.

I was really happy with the service from Mean Glean. The brooch arrived quickly (within 5 days of ordering) and was nicely packaged.

I'm looking forward to wearing this with some forest-y outfits. The temptation to pair it with a long flowing dress and a cloak may prove too much...
